Art - what is its importance? How should it be financed? It's a topic which has been much in the news lately as economics and culture collide. To get an inside view of the subject, won't you join us for the November Lunch with League as Dan Keegan, Executive Director of the San Jose Museum of Art, and Irene Ray of the City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs discuss:
ART, CULTURE, AND YOUR TAX DOLLARS
Dan Keegan is on a mission to transform the way the Museum interacts with the community. Through his leadership, the Museum's attendance has doubled to 200,000 visitors per year and the Museum's diverse visitor demographics are a model for all museums. The San Jose Museum of Art is the largest provider of Art education in Santa Clara County and the South Bay Area. In 2004 the Museum, under Dan's leadership and in cooperation with the City of San Jose, announced plans to develop an international center for art and technology in downtown San Jose. Dan also served on the Executive Committee of the 2006 Zero One San Jose Global Festival of Art on the Edge which was held in August this year.
Irene Ray joined the City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs in 1991, where she specialized in special events management and grants administration. She has broad experience working with the community, arts/cultural organizations, special event producers, and government agencies. Currently, Irene manages the Office of Cultural Affairs (a division of the Office of Economic Development) overseeing the public art program, arts and festival grants, special events, arts education initiatives and community arts development.
